How to apply for UK student loans

If you’re starting university next month and haven’t figured out your student loans, now is the time to do so. It’s not too late to apply, but those who do so now are unlikely to get all of their funds in time for their course to begin.

We’ll look at what students and parents should consider.

Student financing is government money that you can apply for to help pay for university tuition and living expenses while you’re studying.

There are two types of loans. The tuition fee loan, which pays course fees and is paid directly to the university or institution; and the maintenance loan, which is aimed to help with expenditures such as housing, food, and books.

According to Ucas, tuition fees cover fundamental aspects of your course and academic life (lectures, seminars, and tutorials, course administration costs, access to course-related facilities, and so on), as well as core services relevant to students’ wellness. However, they normally do not cover items like library printing or photocopying; optional field excursions, textbooks and other course materials, and club and social participation.

The maintenance loan is somewhat means-tested; the amount a student receives is determined by their family income (most students’ parents’ income), where they live, and where they will be studying.

Once the receiver has graduated and is earning more than the minimum wage, the student loan must be repaid.

Before you enter university, you must apply to the student finance organisation in the nation where you live. You may apply for student financial aid online.

Apply for student funding

Technically, you can still apply for funding up to nine months after the first day of the academic year for your course.

However, the Student Loans Company says student finance applications can take six to eight weeks to process and has indicated that students who apply now probably won’t receive their full maintenance loan entitlement when the term starts. “We will try to get some money to them and top it up later,” a spokesman says. Typically it will award the minimum maintenance loan amount first, so the student has some money at the start of their course, followed by a top-up payment if they are eligible for more funding.

In terms of tuition expenses, this is typically something that can be handled relatively fast. Tuition fees are usually not levied immediately away at most colleges – the first payment date is usually in October or November.

How much maintenance loan/ student finance do I get?

Each country in the United Kingdom has its own set of regulations, so it relies in part on where you generally live. Other important considerations are household income and whether you will live at home or away from home.

In England, the highest loan for a student living at home in 2021-22 is £7,987, while the minimum loan is £3,516. The highest and lowest amounts are £9,488 and £4,422, respectively, if you will be living away from home outside of London. They are £12,382 and £6,166 respectively if you will be living away from home in London. If your yearly household income is less than £25,000, you’ll get the maximum maintenance loan, while the minimums kick in at levels ranging from £58,000 to £70,000. “Unlike the fees loan, it’s paid straight to your student bank account once a term (monthly in Scotland), and you may spend it on anything you like – which is why you need to be smart about it,” Save the Student explains.

What other help is there?

Check with your university to see if there are any bursaries, grants, or scholarships available. Each institution or college will have its own set of requirements for who qualifies and how much money you may get.

Universities and colleges frequently have hardship grants, which means you may be eligible for additional payments if you are having financial difficulties.

In the meanwhile, several organisations, municipalities, and corporations are willing to help.

People may use the Scholarship Hub to look for and apply for university scholarships, grants, and bursaries in the United Kingdom.
